US Federal Reserve Hikes Interest Rates: Bangladesh Bank Must Act to Avert Renewed Currency Stress, Higher Inflation and Exchange Rate Volatility

When the US Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in March 2022, pressure intensified on Bangladesh’s foreign exchange market. From roughly 86 BDT then to an official interbank rate of 122.80 BDT now, buying one dollar costs approximately 43% more (kerb markets show a 50% decline of the BDT against the USD). On 16 September 2026, the Fed raised rates again by 25 basis points, while the ten-year US Treasury yield recently crossed 5%. Higher US rates make dollar investments more attractive, potentially renewing pressure on the taka and increasing external borrowing and refinancing costs.

With elevated inflation, rising unemployment, soaring energy costs and essentials already beyond many households’ reach, further depreciation could impose an intolerable burden. For import-dependent Bangladesh, it would make food, fuel and foreign debt servicing even more expensive. Bangladesh Bank must immediately respond with a restrictive monetary stance, calibrating adjustments to domestic inflation, currency pressures and unemployment. The Finance Ministry and Government of Bangladesh must reinforce this with fiscal discipline, restraining debt-financed, unproductive spending while protecting essential imports, productive investment and vulnerable households. The crisis of March 2022 must inform our response: timely, coordinated action is imperative. Ordinary people cannot be left to bear the cost of another exchange rate crisis.
